| PLAYING FOR SUCCESS |
| ||
15 pupils from Year 6 are currently taking part in the Playing for Success initiative being run by Hull Kingston Rovers. The children visit Craven Park on a Tuesday afternoon after school to take part in educational activities based around rugby league.
The children are taught by Mel, Karl and Luke and all activities are aimed at increasing the skills that the children already have, or gaining new skills.
During their first week, numeracy and literacy were on the menu. The children first split into two teams and had to create their own fantasy Super League team, this involved buying all the players and the coach with a limited amount of money. The children worked really well in teams. The progress of their fantasy teams is being logged each week, and at the moment 'Southcoates Storm' are in the lead!
The children were also asked to write a piece of descriptive text, this was about how it must feel to be a player in the tunnel at Craven Park just before they run out onto the pitch. They were encouraged to use emotions, what they might be able to hear and any smells in the air. There were some lovely pieces of writing read out at the end of the afternoon.
Last week the children started to look at stop/go animation, the kind of thing used to create the Wallace and Gromit movies. They made their own stadium backdrop and then were shown by Karl how to make their characters from modelling clay - we ended up with some very impressive looking stadiums. Next week they will be shown how to animate their characters and will create a short movie.
All the children involved (and the grown ups - Mrs Croshaw and Mrs Dixon) are thoroughly enjoying their time spent at Craven Park and look forward to each new session.
There will be more photographs to view here as the course continues.
